How You Can Learn Best Practices From Other Startups

A few weeks ago I wrote about ‘Why You Should Hang Out With Like Minded Individuals‘ in reference to the CTO Round Tables that our team setup. But they didn’t just setup the CTO round table, they created the business development round table and the customer service round table.

The customer service round table met the other day in downtown Vancouver with representatives from Ubertor, RideBooker, Function Point, Advisor Websites and of course PayrollHero.

Customer Driven Product Development

Part of that growth is focused around customer driven product development. At PayrollHero, we don’t build any new features without a client sponsor. Meaning all new functionality has a client that is a champion of that feature and will work with us on the design and implementation.

Yesterday some of our team went on client visits, not to meet with the owners, managers, payroll admins or HR, but rather the employees, the end users of our platform in their environments.

They visited The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, The Picture Company, Krispy Kreme and FaBurrito and learned a ton about what employees love about PayrollHero and what more they want from it.

Wingstop-payrollhero Wingstop, the 5th fastest growing brand in the United States is coming to the Philippines thanks to an exclusive development agreement announced a few weeks ago. Wingstop Philippines, Inc. plans to open 50 restaurants across the country with the first stop opening shortly.

The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Philippines was our second client and we have been able to grow along with them as they add more stores each month. seat-giveaway We had the honour of presenting the Asia Premier of the film Crocodile in the Yangtze – The Alibaba Story in the Philippines just over a year ago. We flew in the director, Porter Erisman so that we could watch the film as well as do a question and answer with Porter after.

It was an amazing video and a fantastic night. We had tech entrepreneurs from all over Southeast Asia fly in to join the event and take in one of the most entertaining movies on entrepreneurship. Of course a big thanks to EO Philippines and Amazon for stepping up and sponsoring the event so that it could all be possible.

Security Update: Heartbleed Bug

It has been discovered that there was an issue with the encryption software library called OpenSSL which is used in a majority of online software and websites. It has caused some concern in the general media and is being referred to as the heartbleed bug. We felt we should quickly inform you about this issue, and what it means in relation to PayrollHero.

PayrollHero has had very limited exposure, one minor part of our system was affected. This was the software we use to distribute incoming site traffic across our servers. The issue was fixed in less than twenty fours hours of being reported.

There is no evidence to suggest that there has been any intrusion on our software but we’ve taken some additional steps to protect our users. This includes invalidating all existing open sessions prior to the patch, so you’ll need to log back in to PayrollHero. As the nature of this vulnerability is widespread, we recommend changing your passwords across the web, especially for sensitive sites (banking, data storage, etc.)

This sort of quick response time is one of the benefits of using cloud based software. It allows us to fix any problems without having to issue an update or patch. You can be reassured you are constantly receiving the best security for your data well before you are even aware there is a problem.
